During the 18th century Criminal law in the Kingdom of Naples experienced a period of moderate changes. One of the most significant elements was the creation, for the first time, of a Criminal law chair at the University of Naples in 1740 that certified the academic autonomy of this important legal matter. This essay considers the reasons that led to this event trying also to present an overview of Criminal law handbooks. After the analysis of each work and a reference to the authors, it examines some of the most relevant contributions such as the attempts of partitioning in the field of substantial and procedural criminal law and the experimentations in the classification of offences
