Abstract

The conventional dynamics of the art market and traditional economic studies often reduce artists to solitary actors whose work is designed to satisfy collectors or fit into museum exhibitions. However, artists also highlight their civic responsibility through their creative output and social engagement, particularly in self-governed spaces and grassroots initiatives in urban areas. The chapter explores how artists contribute to the pursuit of urban and cultural sustainability, also analysing three case studies from Oslo, Los Angeles and Turin.
