This paper presents a brief review of the recent research on the economic disparities between the North and South of Italy in the aftermath of national Unification. Some social indicators, wages and per capita GDP are considered. In real wages, during the period 1862-78, there was mo disparity between North and South. In per capita GDP, the North-South divide, if already existing, was in any case modest. Disparities increased at the end of the 19 th century, when the Italian industrialisation process started.
