Study Objective: compare the safety and the effectiveness of two tissue morcellators, i.e. Gynecare Morcellex(r) and Rotocut G1(r), during laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy and myomectomy. Design: randomized controlled trial. Design classification: Evidence I. Setting: Academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro. Patients: seventy-four patients with symptomatic fibroid uterine scheduled to laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy or myomectomy. Interventions: laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy and myomectomy followed by tissue morcellating with use of Gynecare Morcellex(r) (experimental group) or Rotocut G1(r) (control group). Results: any difference was not detected between groups, while a significant (P<0.05) difference in handling score was detected in the experimental group in comparison with control group. Conclusion: Gynecare Morcellex(r) is a safe and effective instrument that should be potentially preferred by surgeons with a suboptimal grade of expertise in laparoscopic tissue morcellation. © Copyright 2009, CIC Edizioni Internazionali.
