Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and blood glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activities were investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the potential correlations between these antioxidant enzymes and anaemia during canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanVL). Erythrocyte SOD activities were found to be significantly higher in CanVL than in control dogs. No differences were found in GHSPx activities in the two groups. The negative correlations between SOD activity and both erythrocyte (RBC) number and haemoglobin (HGB) levels in dogs with CanVL suggest a sustained SOD production during the disease. On the contrary the positive correlation between GSHPx activity and both RBC and HGB in dogs with CanVL suggests an impairment of this protective enzyme. These observed changes in the oxidative stress status may contribute to the reduced RBC lifespan in CanVL.

Abstract
These observed changes in the oxidative stress status may contribute to the reduced RBC lifespan in CanVL.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
