Fitness centers offer a series of machines that can be used by participants independently from their training status. CardiowaveTM (CW) is a new device (Technogym R , Italy) that works simultaneously on three axes with a sliding movement of the lower limbs, activating different muscle groups according to the position maintained (i.e., Basic, B; Intermediate, I; Advanced, A; Free style, F). Thus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the muscle activity and exercise intensity in untrained individuals during all four positions and in the 3 intensity levels in order to optimize training programs for untrained individuals. Nine healthy and sedentary individuals (UT) were recruited for the study. To familiarize with the exercise protocol, participants underwent four sessions, each including a 12-min exercise protocol on a position performed at three intensity levels (i.e., 120, 200, 300 rpm). During the experimental sessions, surface electromyography (EMG) activity of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and vastus medialis was recorded. Heart rate (HR), blood lactate, oxygen uptake (VO2) and RPE were evaluated during the test. An ANOVA for repeated measures was utilized in order to evaluate differences (p<0.05) in HR and muscle activation between the four difference positions. For each muscle a 4 (Positions) x 3 (intensity level) x 2 (Groups) ANOVA for repeated measures was applied to verify statistical differences (p<0.05) in EMG data expressed as percentages of basal values.
