The Moby Prince ferry disaster is considered the biggest tragedy that hit the Italian navy from the post-war period to the present day. This work focuses on emergency and rescue management. After the accident, which occurred in the port of Livorno the 10 April 1991 between the oil tanker Agip Abruzzo and the Moby Prince ferry, the rescues converged on the tanker. The second ship was neither identified nor searched, and it has been belatedly found by the moorings of the port of Livorno. Only a shipwrecked man was saved. The other 140 people died burnt alive or poisoned by the toxic substances emitted from the smoke fed by the fire. The rescues were not coordinated (dee Trib. Livorno, Sez. I pen., 21 January 1998 n. 179), despite the discipline at the time in force, aimed at rationalizing the work of rescuers. In this way the responsibilities of the state apparatus that have abdicated the role of guarantors of the safeguard of human life at sea emerge.
