Abstract

Written with the purpose to defend the interests of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the Mare liberum of Hugo Grotius represents a timeless contribution to the freedom of navigation. In this early work it is possible to find the seeds of the idea of a secular law and the recognition of the importance of free competition in an economic system now oriented toward capitalism. Natural law plays a decisive role, because it is shared equally by people with different culture, religion and political systems. In an age ravaged by wars, the use of human reason can help people to rediscover unity despite the diversity of human races.
