Multilayer networks have provided fascinating insights and are experiencing increasing popularity. However, the lack of a standardized naming convention for complex networks has generated several different configurations and hinders their rapid exploration. The focus of this survey is to provide a systematic review of the mathematical model of a multilayer network, examining classification features, configuration models, analysis metrics and visualization approaches. Therefore, we present approaches to the analysis and visualization of these complex systems for the extraction of meaningful information. Finally, we include a section on existing databases that store multilayer networks, highlighting that no biological databases exist for their extraction.

Abstract
Multilayer networks have provided fascinating insights and are experiencing increasing popularity. However, the lack of a standardized naming convention for complex networks has generated several different configurations and hinders their rapid exploration. The focus of this survey is to provide a systematic review of the mathematical model of a multilayer network, examining classification features, configuration models, analysis metrics and visualization approaches. Therefore, we present approaches to the analysis and visualization of these complex systems for the extraction of meaningful information. Finally, we include a section on existing databases that store multilayer networks, highlighting that no biological databases exist for their extraction.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
