Le XII tavole e la questione dell'ambasceria

Are Livius and Dionysus’s (Liv. 3.31.8 e Dion. Hal. 10.51.5) narrations of the embassy who was sent to Greece and Magna Graecia to learn the laws reliable? For over three centuries, there have been many different answers to this question. For several reasons, the critical issues raised appear to be surmountable. The context of the story is substantially reliable, and the historiographical essay leads us to believe that the purpose of the embassy was to offer a set of knowledge aimed at providing the most balanced institutional solution and forming a new magistracy to give the Keepers an overview of how the Greek legislation works.

Sono attendibili Livio e Dionigi (Liv. 3.31.8 e Dion. Hal. 10.51.5) quando narrano della legazione inviata in Grecia ed in Magna Graecia per apprendere le leggi? La domanda ha trovato per più di tre secoli differenti risposte. Gli argomenti critici posti appaiono per più ragioni superabili e, in un quadro di sostanziale attendibilità del racconto, la tradizione storiografica offre elementi che orientano a pensare che scopo dell’ambasceria fosse quello di offrire un insieme di conoscenze volte a realizzare la soluzione istituzionale più equilibrata e, costituita la nuova magistratura, fornire ai decemviri una visione complessiva del sistema in cui si muovevano le legislazioni greche.
