This review will examine the application of genetic analysis to cytological specimens obtained by fine-needle aspiration biopsy in the management of thyroid turnouts. In particular, it will consider the use of polymerase chain reaction-based techniques in the diagnosis of the micrometastasis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma to cervical lymph nodes, as well as in the detection of oncogenic alterations in solid thyroid nodules.
